What Is a DOT Physical Exam?
A DOT physical exam is a federally required medical evaluation for commercial drivers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates that it confirm that drivers operating vehicles in interstate commerce are physically and mentally fit to do so safely.
It covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a full review of your medical history. If you pass, you receive a Medical Examiner's Certificate and a DOT medical card, both valid for up to 24 months depending on your health status. What to Expect at Your Appointment
The exam itself is straightforward. Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes from check-in to out the door.
Your provider will review your medical history with you, check your vision and hearing, measure your blood pressure and pulse, and perform a physical assessment of your overall function. A urine sample is collected on-site as part of the standard FMCSA protocol. We walk you through everything as we go; nothing is rushed, and nothing gets skipped.

Who Needs a DOT Medical Certification?
You need a current DOT medical card if you operate a commercial motor vehicle in any of these situations:
The vehicle weighs more than 10,001 pounds
You drive a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver
You transport hazardous materials requiring a placard
You hold or are applying for a commercial driver's license (CDL) in Minnesota
If your card has expired or is about to, you cannot legally drive until it's renewed. Scheduling early avoids gaps that could take you off the road. Drivers managing controlled conditions, hypertension, and diabetes are not automatically disqualified; the certification period is discussed at the appointment.
